Greetings!
2011 takes the cake as one of the best years ever for North Sails in NZ.
As well as Volvo Ocean Race projects where 3Di has emerged as a
revolutionary force in offshore sailing, we are very involved in both
the AC45s and 72s for Emirates Team New Zealand, and right now we have
sails underway for four magnificent J Class yachts – including one
early adopter who has selected 3Di.
Bicky and Josh Tucker are sailing the Farr 55 Living Doll in the
Sydney-Southport, and will be joined by Andrew Wills who will trim the
boat’s brand new 3Di main for Hamilton Island Race Week, where
TeamVodafoneSailing will also compete with a brand new 3DL mainsail.
Audi All for One (pictured above) won the latest MedCup event in
Cagliari with the top four boats exclusively using North Sails, the
majority being 3Di.
The Pacific Voyagers Vakas
(pictured) – a fascinating example of the traditional combined with the
modern - have completed their voyage from Auckland to Hawaii, and are
now enroute to San Francisco.
Upstairs in One Design, Derek Scott is making skiff sails for Graeme
Cately’s new 18ft skiff that will contend the World Championships in
2012, and the Melges 32, Argo, won the Europeans, complete with sails
from our loft.
The Kiwi crew skippered by Anatole Masfen placed a respectable 13th at
the San Diego Etchell Worlds and North Sails customers secured 1st,
2nd,3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 10th spots – one short of a clean
top-ten sweep. Great guns.
Talk soon,
The Team at North Sails

VOR UPDATED
Just around the corner
|
|
In
less than 100 days the Volvo Ocean Race will start in Alicante, Spain,
and North Sails is in full swing building sails for Emirates Team New
Zealand’s Camper entry, after the success of the first trial set.
In the last issue we reported on the incredible durability of 3Di for
offshore racing, and Burns Fallow and the design team, working with
Andrew Lechte, have learnt a tremendous amount about 3Di structures in
the design and testing process.
Richard Kiff, who is the head sailmaker for Camper, has been working
with the North Sails team, and Daryl Wislang is the sailmaker on board
for the race.
Six out of seven teams entered in the VOR will be using North 3Di,
which sailed around the world without wear, tear or repair, aboard
Virbac-Pabrec 3, winner of the recent Barcelona World Race.

Hello!
After supplying all of the gennakers used in the recent Louis Vuitton Trophy in Nice, the team is now working hard on sails for the superyachts Zefara, Imagine and Adele, whilst General Manager Richard Bicknell is in Europe fitting the new Tiara sail wardrobe. The TP52 fleet is being reconfigured to carry square top mainsails and bow prods, and will also carry more ballast but less crew. With fresh sail cards being issued for the new season, and following the success of Emirates Team New Zealand and Artemis in the Audi MedCup, a busy time is expected.
Here in New Zealand, Burns Fallow gave a great talk at Hamilton Island Yacht Club two weeks ago, and we are hosting an industry marine talk on 3 December to highlight new technologies such as 3DL, Skysails, and our rotational pit. Plus Alastair Gair, sailing with Derek and Andrew, took out the Etchell Nationals, and Andrew Wills and his team placed second in the Keelboat Nationals - all great results.
On a personal note, we wish all the best to our sales representative Josh Tucker, who is getting married to Sara Roberts this month, and congratulate Jim Maloney's daughter Alex for her win in the Young Sailor of the Year category of the Yachting Excellence Awards announced on 20 November.
We are keen to hear from you - see you on the water soon.

NEW OPTI CHAMPS
Top five to North Sails at North Island Champs
|
|
The Optimist North Island Championships were an excellent event for North Sails: Jayvee Buchanan won the event, taking the trophy with him to the South Island. Four of the top five places went to North Sails boats:
Jayvee Buchanan 1st (Norths)
Olivia Mackay 2nd (Norths)
Taylor Burn 3rd (Norths)
Ryan Lo (SIN) 4th
Trent Rippey 5th (Norths)
“Jayvee, Livy, and Trent were all in the North American team that went to the Carribean and it is good to see that they have learnt some good lessons and are now at the top of the NZ fleet along with 2009 National champion, Taylor,” says national coach Andrew Wills.

SAIL CARE TIPS
Looking after Mylar sails
|
|
Sails made of Mylar film laminated to a polyester substrate provide good strength for their weight, but they are also relatively fragile, so it's wise to:
- Never exceed your sail's recommended wind range
- Never use a genoa that doesn't have spreader patches
- Don't flog the sail unnecessarily

Hello!
The build up to the summer race season is always a hectic time around
here. The HSBC Premier Coastal Classic seems to be the readiness
deadline for most race yachts, and cruisers are also beginning to place
orders for their summer trips away. Matt Kelway, Danielle Bowater and
Andrew Wills represented the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron at the
New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup in Newport, Rhode Island during
September, whilst Josh Tucker travelled to Vanuatu to assist some
Noumean customers, before a delivery aboard the superyacht Silvertip.
In October the team will travel to Hong Kong for the China Coast
Regatta, and to visit the new Hong Kong loft.
We are keen to hear from you - see you on the water soon.

Mainsail-genoa interaction
|
|
It's
obvious that the main doesn't function in a vacuum. All you have to do
is move forward a bit to see that it interacts greatly with another
important sail called the genoa. The area that separates the main from
genoa is called the slot. The width of the slot is controlled by a
number of different factors...

SAIL CARE TIPS
Reduce chafe
|
|
The
more a sail rubs against any part of the boat or spars, the sooner it
is likely to show failure. There are a couple of good ways to extend
the life of sails: First, avoid chafe whenever possible, i.e. don't let
the running backstays rub against the leeward side of the mainsail;
don't drag sails over non-skid decks, around shrouds, or along the
dock.

Hello!
What a terrific few months. The culmination of the Volvo Ocean Race,
for which North Sails produced every single sail, wrapped up a terrific
event, in which the extreme heat and extra UV light pushed us to
develop our sails in new ways. Our work with the TP52s has proven very
exciting, and New Zealand youth are excelling internationally. Through
the Optimist class in particular, North Sails has close involvement
with youth sailing and we are thrilled to see two new Kiwi world
champions emerge this month, including Alexandra Maloney, daughter of
North Sales Consultant Jim Maloney, sailing with Bianca Babrich-Bacher,
winning the Women's 420 World Championships, today in Italy. Successes
like these are very important to New Zealand's future Olympic success.
Alfa Romeo has just arrived in Auckland and will use local racing,
including the HSBC Premier Coastal Classic at Labour Weekend, as part
of its warm up to the Sydney-Hobart on Boxing Day, and we are
anticipating the launch of Jim Farmer's new 52 footer and enjoying the
process of sail design.
See you on the water soon.

LESSONS FROM THE OCEAN DEEP
What the Volvo Ocean Race has taught us
|
|
North
Sails has powered every single entry in the history of the Volvo Ocean
Race. Key lessons from the 2009 edition, considered the toughest yet,
include overcoming water damage while reefing and increased UV exposure
on the new, longer course, increased loads as the boats pushed even
harder, and getting the very best performance-durability ratio through
sophisticated R&D.

SAIL BETTER
The science of spinnaker trim
|
|
Too
many times have I been racing on a boat where someone says "The clews
aren't even - raise the pole." Well, yes, this is true - the clews
should be even - if you are using the right sail in the right
conditions at the optimum wind angle, which is not always the case.
When I ask a lot of people how the break looks, more often than not
they are not sure what I am talking about...

SAIL CARE TIPS
Avoid direct sunlight
|
|
Direct
sunlight is one of the worst enemies of sails since it will eventually
cause breakdown of the cloth. Therefore, your goal should be to keep
your sails out of the sun whenever you are not using them. A roller
furling headsail, for example, should definitely have UV material on
its leech and foot for protection when it's rolled up. If you flake
your main on the boom, always put a cover on it.
